Clean air and clean water are important priorities for Canada’s chemistry industry. Since 1992, the first year of emissions reporting under
Responsible Care®, chemical producers have reduced emissions to air by over 73 per cent and to water by over 99 per cent. Emissions of known and probable carcinogens have declined by 94 per cent and stratospheric ozone-depleting emissions have been reduced by 66 per cent. Today, a unit of chemical product is manufactured with 87 per cent less emissions than in 1992.
Our ongoing reporting of emissions is a vital part of our public commitment to Responsible Care® and by extension, our commitment to engaging our stakeholders in dialogue. Companies that are part of the Chemistry Industry Association of Canada welcome the opportunity to engage in discussion with Canadians regarding the emissions of substances and the reduction projections presented in the Reducing Emissions report.
